i am going to rebuild my 302 sometime in the future and i am trying to get all the parts together. i called comp cams and had them suggest a cam. anyway, i gave the guy all the info and he asked what rpm i wanted to run and i tol him i wanted to stay under 7000 rpm. the cam he recomended is a 3500-7200 cam. what the hell, am i just supposed to short shift it or what? its a 13.0:1 306 with a 4000 stall. the cam they suggested is a 351w solid roller with .621/.627" and 292/296 adv duration.anybody have any idea ? are the rpm ranges on the cams for shits and giggles or what

In my experience rpm ranges specified by cam mfg are pretty accurate if the catalogue suggests the cam works best between 3500 and 7200 in a 351 it likely does.......question is how well will it work with less cubes......the adv duration numbers suggest it is a cam that will work in the mid to higher rpm range......what is the duration at .050 it is a little more telling....and the lobe separation will also have an impact on the rpm range.....

Whats the big deal with staying under 7000? You have a 3" stroke and a solid roller cam, rev that puppy to the moon.

so okay here's a random question...what kind of profile should you be looking @ if you wanna move the powerband down in the rpms...

my wife's focus has no low end power...we're talking you don't touch the powerband until 4500 and it pulls hard (for a 4 cylinder) from there until the 7200 redline but under normal driving you don't hit about 3K...so I'm lookin to replace the cam since it's the only way I can think of to move the power...I'm trying to hit between 2500 and say 6500 if possible...

sorry not trying to hijack the thread but since the profiles were being discussed I thought I'd ask...

i talked to my engine guy about the cam and i am just going to stroke it to a 347 and keep it around 6400. that will put me in the upper 10s.thats all i am looking for right now. i dont want to rev the engine too much because i dont want to tear into it every year.of course anything can and will happen racing but if i can get 500 passes out of it that would be good.

Don't know about 500 passes and run that fast with a 347. I have a friend that broke his 347 a few months ago, it was a stock block internally balanced. He got just a few over 200 passes. He was running upper 9's though. His engine made 510hp on the Engine dyno and he was hitting it with a 125 shot. But he would see the 8000 rpm band quite often as I have seen him hit the recall button after going threw the traps.

all things considered, this will be a very mild engine.no boost, no nitrous and not even a transbrake. the car doesnt weigh much over 2400 lbs.and by the time my little 302 becomes a 347 i will have taken another 200 lbs or so out of it.500 passes is a pretty high expectation but i shouls have over 300 passes on this 302 by the time i rebuild.i am not spinning this motor over 6400 and running 11.50s so with some more weight out and a little more cam it should go high 10s pretty easy with another 45 cubes.
