Timing pointer

I just ordered and received today by UPS a anodized blue timing pointer for my 88 Notchback. My problem is, this was a 4cyl. car that I converted to a V8, 347. I don't have a timing pointer on there as of now. How do I establish the correct location of where to mount the pointer once I have it attached to the timing cover. Do I need to mount a factory type pointer on there first to establish a base line and go from there?

I have always been very happy with UPR's products as of this point.
